When Walks With Dad Are Not Special

Recently it has become apparent that walking with the kids isn't quite the treat that they used to think it was.  It is pretty much an everyday occurrence around here.  We do try to make it fun but even a lot of a fun thing can get old.

Yesterday the girls were treated by being allowed to watch some TV shows on the computer (what are we supposed to call it anyway?).  I couldn't convince them for anything to turn down the TV to come take a walk -- even with the pitch of stopping for some kind of treat while we were out.

Slightly bummed I might lose out of any companionship for my walk, I very quickly took refuge in how grateful I am that TV on the computer is the "treat" in our home.  Walks with dad are just a given.  They can have those any day and anytime they want.

To me, this is such a vital part of my goal for raising our kids.  Never be so busy that time with them seems like a treat.  It shouldn't be a novelty.  If it is, I am not spending enough time with them.

To some extent it is about priorities.  Sometimes my schedule just doesn't allow it.  But instead of sitting home in the evenings watching TV after work, we are almost always out walking around.

I am so happy that walks with dad are not that special.  I wouldn't trade that for anything.
